Frequently Asked Questions

Allergies

Understandably, adults, parents and educators alike may have concerns about potential allergic reactions for themselves or the students.  However, as required by their organizations, handlers must meet cleanliness and grooming requirements which minimize allergic contact.  Students, faculty, and staff voluntarily interact with the dog, and those participants with allergies, would be able to avoid risky contact.

Phobias

There is no doubt that some children and adults may have a minor, to severe fear of contact with dogs. This may be due to a trauma, negative experience, or lack of positive exposure.  Since therapy dog programs are based around comfort and positive interactions, no one would ever be forced to interact with the dog.  By maintaining specific routes and locations within facilities, unwanted contact or exposure can be avoided, thus minimizing the fear issue. Experience and research has shown that with a trained handler and therapy dog, children and adults can learn to overcome their fears of animals and in turn, grow in respect and appreciation of them.
